Dear students:

Welcome to the 2023 CalArts Community Arts Partnership Summer Arts program (CAPSA)! We hope you make art, friends, and memories this summer, and we’re so excited to share this experience with you.

Attached you’ll find information that will help you and your parent(s) or legal guardian(s) during this course. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please call our main office:

Pickup and drop-off

Please arrive at the Dorsey High School auditorium at 9:30am, where you will sign in before going to your classroom. If you are being picked up please ask them to arrive at the auditorium at 2pm. With your parent(s)’ or guardian(s)’ permission, you can also commute on your own. The Farmdale metro station is directly adjacent to Dorsey. If you haven’t already, please use the included Pickup Form to let us know how you will be arriving and departing.

General information

The program runs from Wednesday, July 5, 2023, to Friday, July 28, 2023, weekdays from 10am to 2pm. Lunch will be provided daily.

COVID, illness, and self care

If you are feeling unwell, please stay home and rest, both for your health and for the health of our students and instructors. If you feel unwell during class time, please alert your instructors. Self care is a very important part of an artistic career and we encourage you to do so. Please do so!

Per LAUSD protocol, masks are not required but are available to students on request.

Water

CAPSA will be providing water bottle refill stations and we will be providing you with a water bottle to refill. Upon receiving your bottle at registration on your first day, please rinse it and label it as yours. Your instructors will provide markers if needed. You are of course welcome to bring your own bottle, but you don’t have to.

Thursday is college day

We will be continuing the Dorsey tradition of designating Thursdays as college prep days. Your instructors will be available to talk about admissions, art school, and pursuing an arts career. Before class, our writing instructors will be available to help with applications and essays – please arrive early if you want to take advantage of their expertise.

Classroom and equipment restrictions

Please only use materials provided by CAPSA and your instructors, even if you are a student at Dorsey. In addition, please stay within the designated areas. There are classes happening elsewhere at Dorsey and we must not disturb them.

Culmination

We are hosting a culmination celebration on Saturday, July 29 from 12pm to 3pm. Please invite friends, family, and all your favorite people!

Dress code

Artmaking is a physical activity; please wear something you can move in. For safety, please wear closed toed shoes. Out of respect to Dorsey’s dress code, please refrain from wearing clothing with imagery or text referring to anything that may be seen as objectionable or offensive (like drugs, nudity, violence, gangs, etc.); transparent fabric; and clothes that reveal undergarments.

Your items

There will be a lot of students and a lot of moving around. You are solely responsible for keeping track of your things.
